Interesting read on the importance of reading by Tim Challies, also linking to the original article by Bob Kauflin, What – Me Read?

Remember the baptism discussion by Piper and Grudem, Mark Dever joins in on the Baptism and Church membership, AND Sam Storms, AND Ligon Duncan, BUT over at Between Two Worlds, Justin Taylor has organized it into a “Baptizoblogdebate Roundup

Over at Challies.com, Tim gives us a little bit of Whitefield action on “How to Listen to a Sermon,” it is a quick and good read

This is interesting to say the least, it maps out all the locations mentioned in the bible on google maps, check it out

Verses:
1 John 3:19-24
By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

“It would ill become me to speak in a slighting way of ‘hopes’ and ‘trusts’. But I fear many of us sit down content with them, and go no further. I should like to see fewer ‘peradventurers’ in the Lord’s famil, and more who could say, ‘I know and am persuaded.’ Oh, that all believers would covet the best gifts, and not be content with less! Many miss the full tide of blessedness the gospel was meant to convey. Many keep themselves in a low and starved condition of soul, while their Lord is saying, ‘Eat and drink abundantly, O beloved.’ ‘Ask and receive, that your joy may be full’ (S. of S. 5:1; John 16:24).”

-J.C. Ryle

James 4:1-10
What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

I said there was not going to be an update, sorry I lied, but I figured I had some time to do some stuff, but it will be shorter than the other posts and not really have anything too important

I will be at Berean Community Church’s retreat from 15-18, I am excited for it, Greg Harris from Master’s Seminary is going to be speaking and the theme will “the Glory of God.” Because of the retreat I will not be updating next week

For those who would like to know I will be flying back up north at 4:45pm on the 19th, also excited to go home for summer

Audios:
Here is what I found to be a very very interesting dialogue between Greg Koukl and Francis Beckwith, who if you do not know has recently “reverted” back to the Roman Catholic faith from being the former President of the Evangelical Theological Society, about his recent “reversion”

Articles:
I know many people who own Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology, so I thought those people would be interested in a section revision on baptism, if you do not own it, I highly recommend it

Here is John Piper’s response to what Wayne Grudem changed, But, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, why did you rewrite page 983?

Here is Grudem’s friendly response back to what Piper had said, Dear John

If you did not know Desiring God has their own Youtube account, DGconference and DGdwyl, both are good sources of snippets of conference info and biblical truths, a sample of “The Fear of God” from Jerry Bridges is in the video section

Verses:
Matthew 7:21-23
Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

So when evangelizing today I met a person. We started talking and I asked her if she ever heard of the gospel, she says, “ehh…no,” and I assume in my head that she was brought up in a non-religious family. But then she tells me she’s a Christian. I continued to question her and see if she really thought she was saved, my goal here is not to say what happened with our talk, but I just was reminded of this passage by just her answers. With all the people I have met, the answer I get the most would have to be by far, “I don’t know.” Do you not know Christ came to save sinners? Do you not know no one comes to the Father except through Christ? Do you not know that the Bible is God breathed useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness? Do you not know that faith apart from works is useless? That verse that I chose, to me, is one of the, if not the, saddest verses in the Bible.

Added a few more links to the link page: the 9Marks’ blog, the Gospel Coalition, and others

Also to be a little more inline with the sites name, I’ve decided to have a passage and a thought, question, comment, or what not along with it, something to chew on maybe, and maybe I’ll memorize it too just for a little more motivation to memorize more

Messages:
Another simple Piper message, “How to Deal with the Guilt of Sexual Failure, for the Glory of Christ and His Global Cause

Articles:
From Reformation21, Pride the True Heresy, a nice, neat, short summary of the difference between someone wanting to be a teacher or wanting to teach, I found this statement most piercing “…their theology, no matter how orthodox, is just a means to an end and no sound thing.”

A little more from the 9 Marks blog, if you did not already know they (Mark Dever) are doing a series on “Where’d all the Calvinists come from?” Not very exhaustive but a pretty good overview of what is happening on today in terms of Calvinism

Randoms:
Just a little more promotion for 9Marks (trust me, it was not on purpose), but I just received in the mail the Free Booklet and CD that they offer, the booklet being the 9 Marks of a healthy Church, and the CD is an insightful Q&A session with Mark Dever, I encourage you (whoever “you” are/is) to get it, nothing intense, the booklet being about 60 pages and the Q&A session about an hour long, so start filling out that form, and here is a quote from the Q&A, just to whet your appetite, answering the question “Why do you think it is so important to ask again whether our church’s understand the Gospel biblically?” Mark Dever answers by quoting Don Carson in saying, “…the first generation believed, the second generation assumed, the third generation is lost…”

Thoughts:
So some people usually go random evangelizing on UCI campus and I was just thinking how some people are so adamant or fervent about going overseas to do missionary work, spending hundreds to thousands of dollars just to share the gospel to those in different countries, but when I hear the same people making excuses not to go maybe on their respective campuses, work places, or general gathering somewhere, not willing to spend maybe $5 on gas, it worries me. Of course I most not and do not want to trivialize overseas missions, but I want to see that local missionary work is being done whole heartedly as well

News:
Here are two responses to the recent collapse of the Minneapolis Bridge from John Piper and Albert Mohler, see how each one responds in their own way, there is also a short video mix of Piper on suffering with footage of the incident

Videos:

best quotes from the video,
“Wow, I can’t believe he made a 720.” (After he had fallen about 50 feet)

“HIS SHOOOES!!!!”

Verses:
Hebrews 10:32-36
“But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.”

Speaks for itself really (I know, bad way to start this section by not saying anything about the passage, but it does really speak for itself)
